Angus Ferguson
Artistic Director
He/Him
Angus was born a long time ago in the magical hills in the South West of England. He grew up and went to school there and was a fairly normal English boy. When he was 15 years old, his Mum fell in love and remarried, and it was decided that the whole new family was going to move to Canada. Angus had never been to Canada, and he knew very little about it, but it all sounded like an exciting adventure. A house was bought in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan which sounded very exotic and different. So, the first time he set foot in his new land was when he moved here. It was January 3rd 1978, at 1:30 in the morning. It was 35 below with a pretty serious wind. Angus had never felt anything like it before in his life.

Once he was properly equipped, Angus started to explore the Canadian Prairies and slowly fell in love with them. Apart from one 4-year stint in Montreal where he met his wonderful wife Louisa, he has lived and worked in his new home, Saskatchewan ever since.
Angus is very proud that he has been able to make a living through the Arts – sharing stories with other people and making things.

William stage managed Paper Wheat for the 25th Street’s remount of the National Tour in 1981. It was his first professional stage management and was excited when Angus asked him to do
the show again with a talented team of young actors.

Dancing Sky Theatre is proud and honored to be making art on the great plains of North America, also called Turtle Island and many other names. We strive to reflect rural realities in an urban-centric culture. We recognize that we share this landscape with various indigenous peoples (many signees to Treaty #6), members of The Metis Nation, several generations of settlers, as well as new immigrants to these lands. We also seek to share the space with the
more than human world, both indigenous and immigrant. We aim to respect, and work in harmony and balance with all the diversity of life that surrounds us.

Paper Wheat PROGRAM NOTE
I have wanted to explore PAPER WHEAT for a very long time. When I came to
Saskatchewan in 1978 it was one of the first plays that I saw, and it blew my mind. I had never seen anything like it. It was a local play about Saskatchewan people, it was collectively created by young artists, it was about our own history and big ideas, and its’ theatrical style was radically simple. This was not fancy theatre with lots of tech and effects it was about actors telling a story to an audience in simple and straightforward way.
In many ways it was the foundation of Saskatchewan theatre and much of our work, especially at Dancing Sky, has flowed from that source. Through the 70’s and 80’s it had a huge influence on Saskatchewan theatre artists. I was surprised then, when in talking to some of the amazing young theatre artists that I work with, that they didn’t know about it. It was obviously time to bring it back and celebrate it.
As a new immigrant to Saskatchewan the play was also important to me because of the stories that it told and the values that it represented. It made me feel proud of my new home and the people from all over the world that helped to build it. Many important ideas and institutions were born here, and it truly felt like we were leaders and pioneers.
I feel now that we need to re-discover and celebrate that spirit.
I would like to thank the amazing, creative and brave young theatre artists who have come on this journey with me. Also, a big thanks to Sparky Watts who first worked along side me in 1980 and is still here 45 years later.
I hope that you all enjoy the show and that it provokes many discussions between
families, friends and neighbors. - Angus Ferguson, Artistic Director
